SANAA, Yemen (AP) Yemeni security officials say militants on a motorcycle have shot and killed an army colonel in the eastern part of the country.
The officials said the gunmen attacked the colonel as he walked to his car in an area east of the coastal town of Mukkala, in the southeast Hadramawt province. Militants have often targeted security officials in the province where the military has waged an offensive to try to stop al-Qaida from taking over towns there in June.
The United States has also launched dozens of drone strikes in Yemen, killing at least six suspected al-Qaida militants in Hadramawt in August. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
