KEY POINTS:
Aid organisation World Vision has joined the bid to help four million Iraqi refugees but has had to use its emergency funds for 2007.
Iraqis are fleeing to Jordan, Syria, Egypt and other neighbouring countries to escape threats of violence, death and malnutrition in their home country.
World Vision has gone into partnerships with other aid organisations and has donated $50,000 to Jordan for help with basic living costs for the refugees.
The money was raised through last year's fundraising event the 40 Hour Famine and was set aside for its emergency relief fund.
"We work on a case by case basis" said Tennille Bergin, World Vision spokesperson. "This problem is not going to go away any time soon".
Ms Bergin acknowledges that the money won't go far and that World Vision will have to rely on donations from the New Zealand public.
Although the 2006 40 Hour Famine raised $2.67 million and it is hoped that this year will raise $3 million, there is just not enough money to go around.
Ms Bergin recognises that this refugee crisis is "certainly the worst at this point in time and threatens to get bigger".
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees reports that around 50,000 refugees are fleeing the country every month.
World Vision is in the early stages of advocacy and emergency relief and as a start has sent Judy Moore from the Global Rapid Response Team to assess the situation.
