Woman's terrifying kidnap attempt outside Queensland pub

A man will front court later today charged with a terrifying abduction attempt on a young woman as she stood outside a hotel in central Queensland overnight.

Police say the man approached the 24-year-old as she stood outside the Park Avenue Hotel in North Rockhampton at about 12.15am before attacking her without warning.

"The man suddenly placed the woman in a headlock and attempted to drag her towards a ute that was parked nearby," a police spokesperson said.

"The pair struggled, and the woman was able to alert nearby residents, and when the man saw other people approaching, he released the woman and fled the scene in the ute."

Police responding to the incident spotted the ute travelling south on the Bruce Highway around 1.30am and gave chase.

Officers then deployed a tyre deflation device and followed the ute around the Rockhampton area for another 40 minutes before the suspect bailed on Emu Park Rd just after 2am and fled into bushes.

That's when officers deployed police dog Griffin who tracked the suspect in long grass nearby.

The man allegedly kicked Griffin who responded by biting him on the leg, allowing the dog's handler and other police to take him into custody.

The man, 21, was taken to Rockhampton Hospital where he was treated for the dog bite before being charged with a string of offences including assault occasioning bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evading police, deprivation of liberty, driving without a licence and assault obstruct police.

A police spokeswoman told news.com.au that one of two assault police charges related to Griffin.

"Police dogs get officially sworn into the service so they are officially police officers," she told news.com.au.

Police this morning released CCTV footage of the moments leading up to the attack but are appealing to anyone that was in the area at the time or may have dashcam video to contact them.

The man was due to appear at Rockhampton Magistrates Court this afternoon.
