KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - Wild weather is expected to worsen this afternoon as gale force winds and five metre swells batter the NSW coast, bringing flash flooding to parts of Sydney, the Hunter and the central tablelands.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) says winds up to 90km/h will hit coastal and inland areas, and thunderstorms with heavy rains are due to blanket the Sydney area later today.
In the past 24 hours, suburbs on Sydney's north shore and in the north west have received another 50mm of rain, after a similar dumping in the previous 24-hours.
Parts of the mid-north coast have received over 100mm.
The northern part of the Warragamba catchment area, which supplies Sydney's water, received 30mm to 50mm.
The southern part of the catchment area has received less than 10mm since 9am (AEST) yesterday, but the BoM expects more this afternoon as the storms move south.
A spokeswoman for the Sydney Water Catchment Authority said it was too early to say what effect the rain would have on Sydney's dam storage levels.
More than 100 people have requested assistance from the State Emergency Service (SES) in the past 24 hours.
Flash flooding and high winds threatened homes on the Central Coast, the Hunter region and beachside suburbs in the Sydney metropolitan area, an SES spokesman said.
Trees have fallen on two houses in the Gosford area on the Central Coast and one has fallen on a car at Kogarah in Sydney's south.
A flood watch remains in effect for the Hunter region and road closures are in effect north of Forster and in Taree.
