WASHINGTON - The White House today said America's "thoughts and prayers" are with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his family.
Sharon, crucial to President George W Bush's hopes of pushing ahead with the Middle East peace process, suffered what was described as a major stroke in Jerusalem.
White House national security adviser Stephen Hadley briefed Bush on Sharon's condition. National Security Council spokesman Frederick Jones said "we will continue to monitor the situation."
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the prime minister and his family," Jones said.
Bush has relied heavily on Sharon as he attempts to coax Israelis and Palestinians into a peace agreement. He scolded the hefty Sharon in December to watch what he eats and get more exercise after Sharon suffered an earlier stroke.
