KEY POINTS:
The Times: The personal views of lawyers are as split as those of the general public as to the likely culpability of the couple at the centre of the case that is dominating the media.
However, what legal opinion seems united on, is the likelihood of the couple being charged. A solicitor was reported as saying: "The Portuguese police seem to have a real head of steam up - and they will look very silly, now, if charges are not brought."
The Guardian: Said it was reported that Kate McCann's private diary documents her struggles to look after her "hysterical" children and reveals details about the night Madeleine went missing.
The Sun: Kate's diary was reported to have been handed in to police yesterday afternoon. It said the Portuguese tabloid Correio da Manha's front page story yesterday proclaimed: "Kate insults her children in her diary."
And it reportedly went on to claim on an inside page: "She complains frequently that her children are 'hysterical' and speaks of Madeleine as a child whose excess activity exhausts her."
The Independent: "The diary should also have been seized long ago," Mark Williams-Thomas, a former police child protection officer was reported as saying.
"The disclosures in the media about how they want it would give Kate the chance to remove anything which might implicate herself.
Daily Express: "It seems to be more about Gerry than Kate, because they appear to believe Gerry controlled Kate," a police source was reported as saying.
Daily Telegraph: "Detectives believe Mrs McCann may have accidentally killed her daughter and relied on her husband to help cover up the crime. Although the couple insist the claims are baseless, the cost of trying to clear the 'cloud of suspicion' is expected to run into tens of thousands of pounds."
Daily Mail: "Madeleine McCann died from an overdose of sleeping pills, it was claimed yesterday. The report will come as a grave blow to the McCanns. It supports theories published in Portugal that Mrs McCann was involved in Madeleine's death and her husband helped her dispose of their daughter's body."
Daily Mirror: "They could be forgiven for buckling under the inhuman strain and hiding away from the world. But, still, every day, the McCanns - recognisable the world over - rise to face their ordeal. And they do that for one reason, the absolute certainty that their girl is still alive and will one day be reunited with them and their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie."
A friend of the McCanns was reported as saying: "Anyone who sees Kate with them sees how ludicrous it is to think she could ever harm a child.
"The idea they should have their little girl taken from them and then to be accused of having something to do with it is too much."
BBC: "In a blog, Mr McCann said he and his wife had absolute confidence that when all the facts were presented they would be able to show that 'we played no part in Madeleine's abduction'."
Sky News: "What happened to innocence before proved guilt? The McCanns' daughter is missing for four months, probably dead. Why wouldn't we have some sympathy for them?"
