LONDON - A vicar was killed in the grounds of his church in south Wales today, police said.
Father Paul John Bennett, 59, died at St Fagans Church in the village of Trecynon, near Aberdare in the Welsh valleys.
A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being questioned by detectives.
Police would not confirm reports that the vicar had been stabbed. No more details of the incident were released.
"This is a horrific incident that will undoubtedly shock and alarm the people of Aberdare," said Chief Superintendent Jeff Farrar, of South Wales Police.
"I would like to reassure the community that we have arrested a man and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
"There is no further danger to the public, however there will be a high-profile police presence in the area over the next few days to provide reassurance and support to the community."
Police threw a cordon around the area as forensics officers searched for clues. A post mortem examination is due to be held.
Police family liaison officers are supporting the vicar's wife and children. A Church in Wales spokesman said everyone was shocked by the death.
"He has been here since 2002, and was very much loved," Christopher Smith told the BBC News website. "It is a tragedy."
