High smoking rates and poor diets are major concerns for the future health of Welsh people.
Wales' chief medical officer, Dr Tony Jewell, wrote in his annual report: "Conditions like heart disease, cancer, diabetes and lung disease are major concerns for the current and future health of the Welsh population."
All conditions, Jewell reported in WalesOnline, were preventable so any steps to cut smoking, reduce drinking, exercise more and adopt healthy diets would help people stay healthy for longer.
He noted that inequalities in health were a challenge, and was concerned that Wales could be slipping behind the rest of the UK and Europe.
Adult smoking levels remained "comparatively high" at 23 per cent.
