On NZ Herald Focus - Visitors to the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be given the chance to get up close to one of Brazil's most endangered species, on a trek that is being run by the Game organisers.
The golden lion tamarin is a small and charismatic monkey that used to be common across much of the country. Today the distribution of this flame-haired primate is limited to small pockets of rainforest in southeastern Brazil, just outside Rio de Janeiro.
Thanks to a successful breading programme the tiny primates have been brought back from the brink of extinction.
