MEXICO CITY - Forty-five people were evacuated from a hamlet near western Mexico's rumbling "Fire Volcano", which is the most volatile it has been in more than a decade, civil protection officials said on Tuesday.
The villagers were taken from the settlement of Juan Barragan after an eruption on Monday night. It was the first evacuation since the volcano started blasting out ashes, dust and rocks last month.
The mountain, also known as the Colima volcano, spewed ashes almost 5km high on Sunday, its fiercest eruption in more than 15 years.
The villagers were taken to a temporary shelter overnight, civil protection officials told Reuters by telephone.
The 3860metre Fire Volcano, located in a sparsely populated rural area, has been Mexico's most active volcano in recent years.
Villagers were last evacuated from the area in 2002.
Another volcano, Popocatepetl, stands near Mexico City, home to some 20 million people.
