Victoria bushfire threat passes

Firefighters have battled to contain a huge bushfire in hot and blustery conditions in western Victoria.

The 32,500-hectare blaze triggered emergency warnings after jumping containment lines near the Grampians early on Friday morning.

But the threat was downgraded to an advice message after nearly 300 firefighters and several aircraft fought to build and strengthen containment lines in hot and windy conditions.

The CFA says the fire, which was started by a lightning strike last week, has now destroyed two sheds, killed 60 sheep and burned more than 1500 hectares of private grassland.

The Henty Highway remains closed, but the Grampians Tourist Road has been reopened.

Relief centres at Horsham, Hamilton and Balmoral are now closed.

Temperatures in the low 30s and high winds are forecast for western Victoria at the weekend.
