CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) An inmate at a troubled prison in the U.S. Virgin Islands has been charged with assault after authorities said he stabbed another man.
Police say 24-year-old Major Lee Wormack stabbed a 56-year-old inmate near the collar bone at the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility in St. Croix. Authorities said in a statement Friday that they confiscated a 4-inch folding knife from Wormack's cell.
Federal authorities requested receivership of the prison in 2011, citing dangerous and deplorable conditions. The territorial government has said it has been making improvements, although several inmates have been arrested in recent years following assaults, a fatal stabbing and drug confiscations.
