The United States says it views the United Nations as essential in tackling global security threats and will exercise responsible leadership to ensure its interests and values converge.
"There is no substitute for the legitimacy the UN can impart or its potential to mobilise the widest possible coalitions," US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said in outlining President Barack Obama's new diplomatic priorities, including a commitment to work constructively with most nations.
