US slams Chavez result

Hugo Chavez's allies have defended the election win that gave the President control of Venezuela's Congress.

Opposition parties boycotted the elections, which had a 25 per cent turnout.

Allies accused the opposition and private media outlets of mounting a smear campaign against the polls.
