WASHINGTON - Nine requests for initial reconstruction work in Iraq have been issued by the US Agency for International Development. Four contracts have so far been awarded for a total of US$21.7 million.
An infrastructure reconstruction contract that may be awarded as soon as this week, is expected to be worth around US$600 million ($1.1 billion).
Like many countries, the United States ties most of its aid to US goods and companies.
Amid criticism from British companies, USAID has said foreign companies can take part as subcontractors.
Below is a list of the contracts and awards so far:
AWARDED
- Primary and Secondary Education. Creative Associates International Inc. awarded initial US$2 million April 11 of what the company says is a US$62 million contract over one year. Involves upgrading schools, restocking classrooms and training teachers.
- Local Governance. Awarded April 11 to Research Triangle Institute for US$7.9 million. Seeks to maximise Iraqi participation in all phases and aspects of the reconstruction as the transition to Iraqi administration occurs.
- Seaport Administration. Awarded US$4.8 million on March 24 to Seattle-based Stevedoring Services of America.
- Personnel Support. Helping USAID in planning and managing reconstruction projects. Awarded Feb. 21 to the International Resources Group with US$7 million for an initial 90 days with optional one-year renewals.
PENDING
- Capital Construction. Emergency repair of electrical supply; water and sanitation systems; roads and bridges; public buildings; irrigation structures and port upgrades.
- Airport Administration. Management of humanitarian and trans-shipment operations by air. To be awarded
- Theatre Logistical Support. Warehousing, customs clearance, trucking and provision of bottled water. To be awarded.
- Public Health. Help to restore the public health service. To be awarded
- Iraq Community Action Programme. Twelve month programme to promote diverse and representative citizen participation in and among impoverished communities throughout Iraq.
