SAN FRANCISCO - A California man has been arrested for arranging a deal to sell his 14-year-old daughter for $16,000 (NZ$28,000), 100 crates of beer and cases of meeat.
AFP reports that the 36-year-old man, from Greenfield near San Francisco, had sold his teenage daughter to an 18-year-old man, who intended to marry her.
The father has been arrested on human trafficking charges, and the other man charged with statutory rape.
The girl has been returned to her family.
A Greenfield Police Department statement said that had been several cases of children being offered for sale, including one 12-year-old.
"While each case is unique, the issues of arranged marriages involving minor females or the selling of minor females to older males have become a local problem," the statement said.
