WASHINGTON (AP) A senior U.S. envoy will travel next week to China, South Korea and Japan to discuss North Korea's nuclear weapons program.
The trip by special representative for North Korea policy, Glyn Davies, comes as Washington seeks a common position among nations in the region on how to persuade Pyongyang to disarm.
North Korea says it wants to resume aid-for-disarmament negotiations it pulled out of five years ago, but without preconditions. The U.S. first wants the North to take concrete steps to show it is willing to disarm.
Davies arrives in Beijing Tuesday and will meet his Chinese counterpart Wu Dawei, who visited Washington in late October. The U.S. sees China's role as pivotal because of its strong ties with North Korea.
Davies then travels to Seoul and Tokyo.
