Uruguay's poorest president

MONTEVIDEO: Uruguay's new president may be one of the world's poorest: Jose Mujica declared that his wealth amounts to a 1987 Volkswagen Beetle. The car is valued at about US$1900 ($2800).

The former leftist guerrilla leader put his small flower farm in his wife's name. Mujica's only income is his presidential salary, about US$11,000 a month.

He gives 20 per cent of this to his political movement.
