PORT MORESBY - Police and soldiers in Papua New Guinea's Highlands exchanged gunfire with angry villagers who blocked roads and torched a truck following the election defeat of former Prime Minister Paias Wingti.
Police said the villagers were angry over Wingti's loss of the regional seat.
Wingti called for calm, saying he accepted his election defeat.
Some villagers want all Highlands MPs to leave the political camp of Prime Minister Michael Somare to form a government with former prime ministers Julius Chan and Mekere Morauta. Somare said his party had attracted enough independents and smaller parties to form a Government.
