The United States Mint is normally in the business of making money. Now, however, it is paying it out - in the shape of a US$9 million ($14.6 million) settlement to female employees who alleged their bosses demanded sex in return for promotion, and punished them when they complained.
Up to 130 women could share in the settlement. The Mint is denying liability in the case, but settled to avoid lengthy Equal Employment Opportunity Commission proceedings.
The complaint was filed in 2003 by 32 women who alleged that pornography was openly displayed at the Denver Mint, and women were subjected to unwanted sexual advances and sexual discrimination by male workers and managers.
Last year, a female former worker won US$80,000 after alleging she was subjected to a hostile environment at the Mint.
