SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) U.N. officials say an "exhaustive study" will be undertaken to determine whether a Dominican Republic court decision to strip citizenship from children of Haitian migrants violates international treaties.
Last week's decision by the Constitutional Court applies to residents born after 1929 a category that overwhelmingly includes descendants of Haitians brought in to work on Dominican farms. The two countries share the island of Hispaniola.
U.N. resident commissioner Lorenzo Jimenez told reporters in the Dominican Republic on Monday that U.N. agencies will present their findings in a couple of weeks. He said the court decision "greatly concerns" the United Nations.
Dominican officials have promised to create a path to legal residency for those whose birth certificates are voided, but have provided no details how this might work.
