UNITED NATIONS (AP) U.N. officials are pressing Sudan's government to investigate a rising number of deadly attacks against peacekeepers in Darfur.
U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous is calling on Sudanese authorities to "swiftly identify and hold accountable those responsible" for a "deeply concerning increase" in attacks against peacekeepers in Sudan's western region.
Addressing the Security Council on Wednesday, Ladsous said "impunity for such reprehensible acts must be ended."
A July 13 ambush killed seven Tanzanian peacekeepers and a police adviser from Sierra Leone. Since then, four more peacekeepers have been killed.
Sudanese Ambassador Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman defended his government's efforts to investigate the attacks. He says the Sudanese Armed Forces fought against the perpetrators of one recent attack against peacekeepers and that one Sudanese soldier was killed.
