GOMA, Congo (AP) A U. N. official says a helicopter with the U.N. peacekeeping mission in eastern Congo came under rebel attack.
Mary Robinson, the U.N. special envoy for the Great Lakes region, said Saturday the helicopter came under direct fire Friday from positions held by the M23 rebels in the Rumangabo region. She condemned the attack.
The M23 fighters launched their rebellion last year and briefly overtook the city of Goma almost a year ago.
A surge of violence in late August raised fears they would again try to take the town.
However, a strengthened U.N. mission with a mandate to help fight rebels stemmed the unrest. Both parties have agreed to return to talks though negotiations so far have made little progress.
