KEY POINTS:
LONDON - Police have arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the deaths of four members of his family whose bodies were found in a Newcastle house last night.
The man, who has not been named, was detained in Gateshead.
Earlier, police had launched a murder inquiry after the two adults and two children were found dead.
Police only described the man arrested as a male relative, without elaborating.
The names and ages of the victims are not being released at this stage.
Their bodies were discovered after officers from Northumbria Police went to a house in the Kenton area of the city shortly before 9am local time (10pm NZT).
"Our priorities are to establish exactly how and when the victims died and who was responsible," said Detective Superintendent Steve Wade, adding he could not confirm how the deaths occurred nor whether any weapons were used.
"I do need to speak to anyone who heard any disturbances at this address either last night or early this morning," he added.
