Two soldiers have been killed in a gun attack at a British army base in Northern Ireland. Four others have been seriously injured; two of them are also soldiers.
The attack took place at the headquarters of the Royal Engineers in Northern Ireland at Masserene, northwest of Belfast. Some reports suggest that it may have been a drive-by shooting, while others say the gunmen entered the barracks. It is thought that between 30 and 40 shots were fired.
Northern Ireland endured three decades of civil unrest known as 'The Troubles' in which around 3,000 people were killed. The violence largely ended with the signing of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
