KEY POINTS:
NEW YORK - A man slit the throat of a woman who was baby-sitting her two grandchildren, sexually assaulted one of the children, before shooting himself in a Long Island home, Associated Press reports.
Police said they negotiated with Phillip Zagarella, 50, by telephone for hours and determined he was drunk, according to AP.
The children were let go a few hours later.
When police entered the home Zagarella was already dead.
