Paramedics fought in vain to revive two boys who were buried when a stormwater drain collapsed on them in north Queensland last night.
The boys, aged 12 and 14, died after being pulled from the red soil that smothered them in Ayr, south of Townsville.
Paramedics performed CPR on the boys, who were pulled from the drain in a critical condition.
Every effort was made to revive them, but they could not be saved, the Department of Community Safety said.
It is believed the boys had been playing in the drain, and photos of the scene show a BMX-style bike propped up against one embankment.
