PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands (AP) Officials in the Turks & Caicos Islands have detained 237 Haitians suspected of trying to illegally enter the British Caribbean territory.
The islands' border control ministry says the 203 men and 34 women were traveling on two sloops that were intercepted Tuesday in local waters.
Police escorted the Haitians to Providenciales, the tiny British territory's most populous island. The Turks & Caicos Islands are north of Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
It wasn't immediately clear if the migrants were all in good health. The ministry says repatriation of the men and women has already started.
Poor Haitians have long attempted the perilous journey from their homeland by boat to find work and better lives. Most are trying to get to the United States.
