ISTANBUL (AP) Demonstrators clashed with police Monday outside an Ankara courthouse after the court declined to order the arrest a policeman accused of killing an anti-government demonstrator in June.
Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency says police dispersed a crowd of some 200 demonstrators with water cannon and tear gas after they became agitated over the court's decision.
The policeman, Ahmet Sahbaz, is accused of killing 26-year-old anti-government demonstrator, Ethem Sarisuluk, in June. Anadolu says that the policeman's lawyer claimed at the hearing that his client acted in self-defense. The court postponed his hearing until December.
Sarisuluk was fatally wounded in the early stages of anti-government protests that swept Turkey following a police crackdown on a sit-in to protect an Istanbul park in late May.
