The threat of a full-scale Turkish invasion into northern Iraq seemed to be receding yesterday, as President George W. Bush promised Ankara's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan the United States would do everything it could to stop the PKK Kurdish independence movement launching cross-border attacks into Turkey from Iraqi Kurdistan.
The talks are the climax of intense US diplomatic activity to head off an offensive that could create chaos in what has hitherto been the most stable part of Iraq.
