Turk Cypriots start opening up road dividing island

NICOSIA - Turkish Cypriot authorities have begun opening up a main thoroughfare in Cyprus which has been a major symbol of the island's division for more than 40 years, witnesses said.

Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot authorities, keen to promote contacts, have separately discussed opening up the road with the United Nations, but there had been no indication of the precise timing of work going ahead.
