Tsunami advisory for Japan's Miyagi Prefecture

A tsunami advisory for the Miyagi Prefecture of Japan has been issued following a 6.5 magnitude aftershock off the coast of Honshu this morning.

The quake centred 109 km east of Sendai, which was devastated by the tsunami on March 11, struck at 7.23am Japan time (11.23am NZT) at a depth of 5.9km, the United States Geological Survey reports.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued the advisory and expects a tsunami of around 0.5m.

No tsunami warning has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre for the rest of the region following the quake.

Following the magnitude 9 earthquake there have more than 352 aftershocks greater than magnitude 5, with 59 greater than 6 and three larger than 7.

The largest aftershock was magnitude 7.7 and was recorded 30 minutes after the initial quake.
