New Zealand is to scale back its military presence in the Solomon Islands, says Defence Minister Mark Burton.
New Zealand has 230 Defence Force personnel in the Australian-led mission, including an infantry company, headquarters support staff, communications, engineering and a medical group.
It also supplied a detachment of four helicopters and crew.
During their recent visit to the islands, Prime Minister Helen Clark and Mr Burton were briefed on the good progress being made by the mission and advised of a possible reduction in the military presence.
"Although our military presence is being scaled back, New Zealand continues to play a significant role in supporting the Solomon Islands," Mr Burton said.
The 35 New Zealand police officers will remain there for up to two years.
