Australian Prime Minister John Howard described Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen as a "remarkable political figure" in a tribute to the former Queensland Premier at his state funeral.
Thousands of mourners packed Sir Joh's hometown of Kingaroy, 210km north-west of Brisbane, for the service for New Zealand-born Sir Joh, who died on April 23 aged 94.
Howard told the congregation that Sir Joh, Queensland's longest-serving Premier of 19 years, had made a defining contribution to the state's growth.
