A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade travel advisory for Japan has now removed restrictions for Tokyo.
The easing of restrictions came as the New Zealand National Radiation Laboratory advised there was now no radiation safety hazard to Tokyo.
However, the ministry continued to warn against all tourist and non-essential travel north east of Tokyo in the areas most affected by last month's earthquake and tsunami.
"We continue to advise New Zealanders throughout Japan to monitor local media closely and follow any advice and instructions on precautionary or protective measures issued by local authorities," a ministry spokeswoman said.
There have been no reports of New Zealanders hurt in yesterday's 7.1 magnitude aftershock, she said.
