Eleven million litres of liquid manure which spilled into a river from a dairy farm in New York state have created a smelly flow that is blamed for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of fish.
The toxic tide on the Black River was expected to flow past Watertown, a city of 25,000, which shut off its water intake and is expected to reach Lake Ontario this week.
