SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) The president of one of Bosnia's autonomous regions has been charged with abuse of office for allegedly pardoning several convicts illegally, including murderers, drug dealers and tax evaders.
Zivko Budimir, president of the Bosniak-Croat federation, and six others are accused by prosecutors of having arranged the pardoning of 27 people for which there was no legal reason some of whom were dangerous, according to a statement released by prosecutors Wednesday.
Budimir was detained earlier this year and then released. He has denied wrongdoing.
Bosnia is considered one of the most corruption-prone countries in Europe, partly because of the complex administrative framework but also because of the deep ethnic and political divisions remaining since the 1992-95 war.
