The man the military picked to succeed his late father as Togo's new president has been sworn in, despite a boycott of the ceremony by Western diplomats and a protest by hundreds of students aimed at disrupting it.
Faure Gnassingbe came to power yesterday in the tiny, impoverished country which spent nearly 40 years under the ruthless rule of his father, President Gnassingbe Eyadema.
The new President says Togo is on the road to democracy but the international community has questioned how he came to power, some calling it a military coup.
