Republican Fred Thompson gained a bump in support after his long-delayed entry in the 2008 presidential race and nearly caught the party's front-runner, Rudy Giuliani, in two opinion polls released yesterday.
Giuliani was narrowly ahead 29 to 28 per cent in a CNN poll and 27 to 22 per cent in a CBS/New York Times poll.
