WASHINGTON - A terror attack on the United States or against US interests in Yemen is possible as early as today in a plot believed to be led by a Saudi-born Yemeni man, says the FBI.
In its most specific alert about possible attacks since the September 11 strikes on America, the bureau said evidence an attack may be imminent emerged from interrogations of prisoners captured in the Afghan war.
The alert mentioned the names and nationalities of the "extremely dangerous" suspects, but did not specify possible targets.
The FBI named a suspected ringleader - Fawaz Yahya al-Rabeei, born in 1979, identified as a Yemeni and with a number of aliases.
President George W. Bush issued a new warning to Iraq, Iran and North Korea yesterday, saying the US had a mission to stop nations developing weapons of mass destruction from teaming up with terrorists.
"This President is not going to allow regimes such as Iran, Iraq and North Korea to threaten our way of life.
"Our mission also includes countries which develop weapons of mass destruction - nations with a history of brutality. If they are ever able to mate up with terrorist organisations the free world will be threatened."
