KEY POINTS:
A 14-year-old boy has been speared in the leg with a javelin during a sports class at a Melbourne high school.
The boy was on the oval of the Lyndhurst Secondary College in Cranbourne North, in Melbourne's outer east, when the javelin speared him through his right thigh about 11.30am (AEST) today.
A Country Fire Authority (CFA) spokeswoman said rescue crews had to use specialist cutting equipment to remove the protruding end of the javelin.
She said the javelin was not in the air when the boy was speared and it remained unclear how it came to be impaled in his leg.
A Metropolitan Ambulance Service (MAS) spokeswoman said the boy was airlifted to the Royal Children's Hospital in a stable condition with part of the javelin still in his leg.
She said he remained in good spirits despite his ordeal.
