KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - Police have stepped up their appeal today for information about a Sydney rock-throwing incident that has left a teenager in hospital with severe head injuries.
The 17-year-old Brookvale boy underwent emergency surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital after a rock was thrown into the car he was travelling in Allambie Heights, in Sydney's north, at about 10pm (AEST) on Tuesday.
Police said somewhere along Allambie Road, possibly between Mortain Avenue and Flers Street, an unknown person threw a rock into the vehicle through the car's open rear window.
The boy was a back seat passenger in the car and the rock struck his head, causing severe injuries.
He remained in Royal North Shore Hospital today, where his condition was listed as serious but stable.
This was an improvement from last night, when he was in a critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery.
