Two teenage boys were fishing when they were horrified to discover the body of a woman floating in the Logan River in southeast Queensland.
Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Bristow on Saturday praised the boys, who he said secured the body and handled the situation bravely.
They were fishing in the Logan River at Loganlea, south of Brisbane, around 3pm (AEST) on Friday, when they discovered her body floating in the water, he said.
"Admirably they secured the lady's body and called police," Det Sen Sgt Bristow said.
He said the woman was yet to be identified and police were treating her death as suspicious.
"We are considering it as suspicious given the overall circumstances - the fact that there is someone in the river with no explanation," he said.
"At this stage we haven't been able to identify her."
Det Sen Sgt Bristow said police are going through missing person files in the Logan area.
He said police don't know how long the body has been in the water and whether there's any evidence of violence.
The woman is described as being Caucasian, aged between 45 and 50 years old, 160cms with dark shoulder-length hair.
She was found wearing a red or burgundy coloured t-shirt.
Police are appealing to the public to help identify her.
