TAIPEI - Taiwanese began voting for their next president this afternoon in a closely fought election that may determine whether the island moves closer to or further away from arch-rival China.
The election was overshadowed by an assassination attempt yesterday against President Chen Shui-bian as he campaigned, but he escaped with a bullet wound to the stomach.
Vice President Annette Lu was also wounded in the attack.
It was unclear if the attack would affect the outcome of the election.
Many analysts say it could give Chen some sympathy votes, although most voters had already made their decision based on policy.
