JERUSALEM (AP) A Syrian woman escaping her country's bloody civil war has given birth in an Israeli hospital.
The Israeli military has taken in dozens of wounded Syrians at its border over the past two years and transferred them to Israeli hospitals for care. But the Ziv Medical Center in the city of Safed said Sunday's event marked the first time a Syrian baby was born in Israel.
The hospital said a 20-year-old woman in advanced stages of labor came to the Israeli border since her hometown was under siege and she could not access a local hospital. She gave birth to a healthy boy weighing 3.2 kilograms (7 pounds).
Syria is a longtime enemy of Israel and its citizens are banned from travel there. They face possible jail time if discovered.
