KAMPALA - A Sydney cardiologist has been charged in Uganda with the murder of his estranged wife, gunned down at the gate of her home in the capital Kampala.
Ugandan-born Dr Aggrey Kiyingi, 51, who has a private practice at Merrylands in Sydney, was charged after the funeral on July 15 of his wife, lawyer Robinah Kiyingi, 54.
She was shot several times in her car by attackers who fled on a motorcycle, abandoning a gun about 100m from the scene, police said.
Three other suspects, including a soldier and a police detective, have also been charged in connection with the death, it is reported.
Kiyingi was remanded in custody and is due back in court in Kampala on Wednesday.
The cardiologist flew with three of his children to Uganda after his wife's murder on July 11.
He was taken in for questioning by detectives as he walked to his car following the funeral ceremony, and was later charged.
Kiyingi earlier told mourners at the funeral: "The country has lost a hard-working, dedicated person and good mother. My children need your support and we will work with the police in probing the murder."
Kiyingi filed for divorce from his wife in 2003. She had earlier returned to Uganda from Australia to set up a private legal practice, it is reported.
Kiyingi and his family had tried unsuccessfully to settle in Australia before eventually being allowed into the country in 1981.
The couple have four children aged between 15 and 27. One is a doctor in Australia and another is studying medicine in New Zealand.
Kiyingi is admired as a successful professional and a generous philanthropist who donated money to charity as well as setting up a company selling computers to schools at subsidised prices.
Robinah Kiyingi, who had a masters degree from Sydney University of Technology, was one of Uganda's most senior female lawyers.
