Spanish forensic scientists have identified a key suspect in the 2004 Madrid bombings by reconstructing the remains of his face.
ABC newspaper said it was the first-ever reconstruction of an actual human head without the aid of a computer. With the added help of DNA tests, investigators have determined that he was Algerian Allekema Lamari. He committed suicide in April last year in the Madrid suburb of Leganes, as police closed in on a group of Islamists following the train bombings.
Forensic scientists pieced together the right side of the face with the scattered remains of the head, including the scalp, teeth, an ear and some skin, which were found at the site.
Police said Lamari led the attacks that killed 191 people and injured another 1900, the newspaper reported. The six other suspects who died in the suicide explosion had already been identified.
