New Zealanders planning to travel to Sri Lanka have been warned of extreme risks to their security in parts of the troubled South Asia nation.
The warning from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade followed yesterday's Tamil Tigers attack from the air on a Sri Lankan Air Force base near Colombo's international airport.
"There is an extreme risk to your security in the northern and eastern areas of Sri Lanka due to the fighting between the [Tamil Tigers] and Sri Lankan authorities," a ministry statement said.
Elsewhere, the security risk was high "as the situation is unpredictable ...
We advise against tourist and non-essential travel."
