Rebel and new MP George Speight will not be released from prison to attend Parliament, Fiji's Commissioner of Prisons, Aisea Taoka, has said.
Mr Taoka told FM96 radio in Suva there were no provisions for remand prisoners to be released for sittings of Parliament. He said no exception would be made for Speight, who is in jail on Nukulau island awaiting trial on treason charges.
Speight was elected an MP this month, despite leading an armed coup last year which toppled the elected government of ethnic Indian prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry.
Speight held Chaudhry and other government members hostage for eight weeks before negotiating a deal with the military to end the crisis.
He was later arrested and charged with treason. His trial is due to begin early next year.
