JOHANNESBURG (AP) South African police say 14 police officers and tax officials have been arrested since last month as part of a crackdown on crimes committed by police or people impersonating police officials.
The police force said in a statement Friday that the suspects face charges including fraud, corruption and robbery.
Police say that in one case on Oct. 20, six suspects approached a warehouse and produced a search warrant. The owners of the business there became suspicious and called police, who arrested the suspects and discovered that the warrant was a fake.
Authorities broke up another group using the same criminal method. Police say the suspects allegedly accessed homes and businesses of victims, mainly foreign nationals keeping large sums of money. Once inside, the suspects robbed occupants of money and jewelry.
